Dr. Marjori Krebs is the Director of Licensure and a Professor in Teacher Education at the University of New Mexico’s College of Education and Human Sciences. Her work centers on teacher preparation, with a strong emphasis on community-engaged learning, teacher residency programs, and building meaningful partnerships with school districts and communities.
Dr. Krebs’s research and teaching highlight the importance of preparing educators who are deeply connected to the communities they serve. She emphasizes that effective teaching requires understanding students’ cultural backgrounds, family dynamics, and local contexts. Through service learning and project-based approaches, she helps future teachers connect classroom learning to real-world community needs.
A central focus of her work is the development of teacher residency programs, where students gain hands-on, full-year classroom experience while working alongside experienced educators. These programs strengthen collaboration between universities and school districts, ensuring that teacher preparation aligns with the needs of local communities and supports long-term impact in schools.
Dr. Krebs has also worked closely with Indigenous communities, including long-term collaboration with Zuni Public Schools. This work emphasizes integrating local language, culture, and community knowledge into curriculum and teaching practices. Her approach highlights the importance of listening, relationship-building, and honoring community perspectives in education.
Through her work, Dr. Krebs is helping shape a model of teacher preparation that moves beyond traditional classroom instruction—one that prepares educators to be responsive, community-centered, and equipped to make meaningful contributions in the schools and communities they serve.
