Esther is a master’s student in Latin American Studies at the University of New Mexico whose work centers on community engagement, sustainability, and social equity. Her academic and professional interests are grounded in understanding how communities can shape solutions that improve both social and environmental outcomes.
Her journey into this field began with a curiosity about social infrastructure and the ways community spaces reflect the health and well-being of a society. This curiosity led her to pursue opportunities that combine research with direct community involvement, allowing her to connect theory with practice.
At UNM, Esther has been actively involved in community-engaged initiatives, including participatory budgeting and a food systems project in Albuquerque’s International District. Through this work, she collaborates with community members, local government, and university partners to address issues such as food access and sustainability. She is also contributing to the development of Albuquerque’s first food policy council, helping explore innovative, community-informed solutions.
Esther emphasizes the importance of approaching community engagement with humility and collaboration. She believes meaningful engagement begins by listening to community needs and working alongside community members to create lasting impact. Her experiences have shaped her understanding of leadership, collaboration, and the importance of building relationships rooted in trust and shared purpose.
Looking ahead, Esther hopes to continue working at the intersection of research and community practice, contributing to initiatives that strengthen local communities while also creating broader, transferable impact beyond New Mexico.
